conTenedor - slow food restaurant

conTenedor has been on my bucket list to visit ever since arriving in Seville. I had heard so many good things about it from different people, the focus on healthy eating, tasty vegetables and interesting dishes.  In addition, I was told it would be a better experience to go with a group of people as the servings are big and my friends knew I would want to try as many dishes as possible.  I am so pleased I finally got there recently, and my experience was, as I anticipated, fantastic! The restaurants philosophy is to use only the best ingredients, mostly organic and slow cooking methods to let the food shine.  Their wine list is extensive and well priced, we enjoyed (a couple of bottles of) a fantastic red wine, Sancha Perez, that is produced locally in a winery in Cadiz, Andalucia. The service was impeccable, waiters were fantastic, friendly, knowledgeable and spoke English. I also really loved the space too, the paintings on the walls can be purchased and the menu is ever changing and written on chalk boards, and indicates when the kitchen has sold out of an item by wiping it off!  Another aspect is the open kitchen, it adds to the rustic setting and wooden tables, and personally I love watching the chefs as they dance around the kitchen serving up art.

We were a group of five and this meant we could order up a number of dishes, and although the restaurant was full, I found it a mix of tourists and locals, there was a calm ambience.  Pictures of the dishes we tried are below and I've done my best to translate the Spanish to English.  The meat dishes were stand out, the duck and mushroom rice dish was amazing (a signature dish) and even although it is a large plate designed to share I would definitely go back for this one, solo!

Overall, every bite was flavourful and there was a reason for each item on the plate. I will definitely be back and would highly recommend it to anyone passing through or living in Seville. Make sure you call ahead and reserve a table though and during Summer they are closed in August.

New concept menu:

Monday to Thursday for lunch (13:30 - 16:30, not holidays) called "Meridiano" - each day they will offer a different menu using their same philosophy of high quality food products but with different concept of dishes, for example one menu could include a hamburger using "retinto" meat from a native cow breed from the South of Spain, a vegan "burrito", a Moroccon pastry with organic chicken... I for one, cannot wait to try their new menu out.
